All About This Company

The Greenhouse has been Mosgiel's florist for over 50 years and one of our staff members (I won't say who!) has been here almost half that time. As we grow many of our own flowers right here in Mosgiel our bouquets have very few travel miles. John and Su grow the flowers, Mary, Lynne, Renae, and Ella create the bouquets. As John and Mary are married this makes for great communication and co-operation between the shop and the nursery!

Through the respected Interflora network The Greenhouse is able to send flowers throughout New Zealand and Internationally too. And for 2017, The Greenhouse was once again in the Interflora (Pacific Unit) top twenty.

John van Delft

John van Delft

John comes from a long line of growers - 300 years on his mother's side - and there was never a doubt that he would be a grower too. During his more than 50 years in growing he has been a propagator and grower of shrubs and trees, opened and managed garden centres, and specialized in growing camelias (even in Scotland, UK where 'they' said it couldn't be done!), winning gold medals at flower shows.

Relishing a challenge, in 2008 he moved to New Zealand and become a flower farmer. Although this was an area new to him he has enjoyed the change and the many skills he brought with him have transferred well to this new crop enabling him to grow great quality roses, lilies, gerberas and alstroemeria.

Mary van Delft

Mary van Delft

Mary does not come from a long line of florists. In fact, before coming to New Zealand she hadn't worked with cut flowers at all. Her previous experience was with retail, catering, houseplants, and crafts which were sold through successive businesses.

Just like John, she enjoyed the challenge of moving to a new country and learning a new way to express her creativity. Creating beautiful bouquets with lovely flowers is very satisfying but a lot harder to do and a lot harder work than it appears. Mary said "As a florist you start your day doing weight training with buckets of water - containing flowers - usually by the van load. Flowers may be delicate, but florists aren't"!

And John still gives Mary roses on their wedding anniversay.
